Hi [[contact.first_name]],
Welcome to the Fall 2022 edition of our “Gut Check” newsletter! Put down your pumpkin carver, grab a pumpkin-spice latte, and read about all the exciting things going on at AnimalBiome, including:
- The release of our first-annual State of the Gut report on pet gut health
- Exciting changes coming to our GMP Gut Maintenance Plus supplement
- The upcoming launch of 3 new editions to our Shield line of functional chews
- And much, much, more!
As I read my copy of the State of the Gut™ report, it made me think more about the pets in my life. I grew up in Nevada with two childhood dogs, and one thing I found really interesting in the report is a pet’s exposure to the risk factors that impact gut health varies by state (and that Nevada has an above average exposure to these risk factors!👀). Here’s hoping you learn something new and interesting in State of the Gut too!
If you have any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions for future newsletters, please email me at [email protected].
Thank you,

When our dog, Yuki, came down with hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (bloody diarrhea) and ended up on the medical merry-go-round with recurring bouts of GI distress, we thought that this had to be a pretty rare occurrence. We were surprised to find how prevalent digestive and skin problems were amongst cats and dogs.
We started AnimalBiome to address these problems but to get an investment we needed to convince investors that this is a big problem and estimate how much pet parents were spending on solutions that weren’t really working. Early on, we took some of our scarce resources and did a small Google Survey of ~200 pet parents to prove the idea that Yuki wasn’t alone in dealing with these issues.
Our small survey supported our belief that digestive problems were widespread with our companion animals but the scope of the survey was insufficient to really understand pet parents’ understanding of the problem and the solutions available to them.
This is why I am so proud of the work the team has done on the State of the Gut™ report. This is the first large-scale national survey to dive into the topic of gut health for cats and dogs.
What we found was pretty astounding. While most pet parents know that gut health is important, they don’t really know what to do to support gut health for their pets. Even more surprising was that almost 30% of pet parents reported that the treatment plan from their vet did not solve their pet’s digestive or skin problems.
This means that there are almost 20 million cats and dogs on the medical merry-go-round with Yuki. This is unacceptable. We need to do better to educate pet parents and veterinarians on the drivers of good gut health and how to help pets like Yuki.
This is our mission at AnimalBiome. With your help, we can make this a reality.
- Carlton O., CEO of AnimalBiome

We launched this first-of-its-kind annual report to increase awareness of the importance of gut health and of the crucial role the gut microbiome plays in the overall health of pets. The findings are based on more than seven years of experience testing and restoring the gut microbiomes of tens of thousands of cats and dogs, and on a survey of 2,000 U.S. cat parents and 2,000 U.S. dog parents. Here are some of the fascinating findings we reveal in State of the Gut:
1) 87% of cat parents and 92% of dog parents say gut health is important BUT few can identify the key drivers of gut health...
Fewer than 50% of pet parents correctly identified many key drivers of pet gut health. Download the report to see which ones they missed😉
2) 67% of dog parents and 53% of cat parents have pets suffering symptoms of a gut microbiome imbalance, BUT few know what to do about it...
Sadly, 34% of cat and dog parents do not treat their pets with symptoms of a gut microbiome imbalance, and few know the benefits of probiotics and prebiotics.
3) Gut microbiome health testing is important, BUT few pet parents know what it is...
Gut microbiome health testing for cats and dogs was ranked at the bottom of the list of rankings on the importance of health-related activities.
And much, much, more, including an analysis of the one bacterial group we find at unhealthy levels in 1 in 3 dogs and 1 in 7 cats we test, and how to find out if your pet is at risk!

A New and Improved GMP Gut Maintenance Plus Formula!
Rolling out in early October is our new-and-improved formula for GMP Gut Maintenance Plus! What’s changing:
We are replacing the MOS prebiotic with FOS prebiotic to improve the palatability of the capsule. This has the added benefit of providing our customers with a cleaner ingredient line as GMP will no longer contain the Organic Jerusalem Artichoke, Rice Hull, Rice Bran, or Medium-chain Triglycerides (MCT) that are in the current formula. Lastly, GMP will now be available in a small-size capsule for cats and small breed dogs, and in a larger capsule for large breed dogs making it easier to administer the supplement.
What’s not changing:
GMP will still contain the highly effective yeast-based probiotic S. boulardii and the bacteriophage PreForPro designed specifically to address elevated levels of E.coli in the gut microbiome.
We hope you like these improvements to one of our oldest, and best-selling, products. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to [email protected].

Meet Zak🐶 our DoggyBiome Cover Dog for Q4
"Zak has suffered for years from diarrhea, inappetence, and vomiting. He had been to the vet countless times for supportive therapy and diagnostics, to no avail. Blood work, imaging, fecals, you name it, all came back normal, yet we could never get him relief. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories would help temporarily, but he would always fall back into the cycle of GI discomfort. Our vet then suggested a gut-health test from DoggyBiome. I collected a poop sample and submitted it, and received a detailed report within two weeks that showed Zak's microbiome was severely imbalanced. Following DoggyBiome's recommendations and those of his vet, I ordered the Gut Restore supplement, and all I can say is "wow." Within a week of starting the supplement, Zak became a new dog. His diarrhea was resolving, he was interested in food and beginning to eat regularly, and even began playing with toys, all of which we attribute to the DoggyBiome Gut Restore Supplements. I continue to have his microbiome tested regularly, as Zak has needed several courses of antibiotics and supplements as needed. The DoggyBiome team is very responsive and happy to help with whatever questions I have had. Thanks to DoggyBiome, Zak is on the path to better health and happiness."

Meet Paddy🐱 our KittyBiome Cover Cat for Q4
"When he was only 6 months old, Paddy needed major surgery on two of his feet. The post-procedure antibiotics caused a severe microbiome imbalance, and Paddy was miserable. My vet recommended a Kitty Biome gut health test, and I was able to understand exactly what was imbalanced in his system. Paddy completed two rounds of the gut restore system and PreForPro. After re-testing, his imbalance had significantly improved! When Paddy needs some extra support, I give him Gut Maintenance Plus to help him return to normal. I owe so much to the technology and care provided by KittyBiome. Paddy is so much happier and healthier as a result!"
